Four Times the Sidebars

But wait.

Why do they call them “Sidebars”?

Once upon a time, all blogs looked alike.

They had a small menu across the top, under the title (the “header”), another administrative menu at the bottom (the”footer”). In between these, for the main body of the page, would be two columns: a big, wide column for the blog proper (the “content”), and a narrow column on the side, with things like lists of last year’s highlights. This narrow column on the side came to be called “the sidebar”.

Then came widgets, automated objects for populating the sidebar with calendars, menus, images, and automated lists of all sorts.

The widgets were made to go in the sidebar, the sidebar became two sidebars, and before long, any are which was configured in software to be a home for widgets became known as a “Sidebar”.

“What does that have to do with me?”

If you are a blogger who wants to maximize your blog with advertising, it means a to you. Script ads, and Iframe ads, and Embed ads all go in Widgets, and Widgets go in Sidebars.

The more Sidebars you have, the more places you have to put advertising.

The stock Twenty Twenty theme from WordPress has two “Sidebars”, at the bottom of the page. Two places to put advertising Widgets. At the bottom.

Just those two places.
